Ash Wednesday 2012
Ash Wed, Feb 22, is the first day of Lent, a season of fasting, repentance, and preparation for the celebration of Jesus' resurrection at Easter. The forty days of Lent are reminiscent of the forty days and nights of rain that carried Noah and the ark, the forty years Israel wandered the Sinai wilderness after the great exodus from Egypt, and the forty days Jesus fasted after his baptism in preparation for his public ministry. The ashen cross worshippers wear on the first day of Lent is a visual reminder of our sinfulness and mortality. Join us for our Ash Wed worship liturgis on Wed, Feb 22, at 12 pm & 7pm.
Sacred Citrus / an orange on the Lord's Table/
Recalling Jesus’ practice of open table fellowship, we place an orange on the Lord's Table in the hope that one day every community of faith will welcome people of every race, economic status, gender and sexual orientation, and special ability.
This practice is inspired by Rabbi Susannah Heschel who, in the early 80's began the tradition of putting an orange on her Passover Seder plate to represent the fullness of Judaism when LGBTQ persons were truly welcome in the community of God’s people. |
